Life Saver
OCTOPUSSY - IN MILLION YEARS IN UTILA (2010): This work announces alchemical changes, forged by the fire of life and awareness. Magical creatures from intuitive realms replace pink dresses, Barbie dolls and the Hollywood standards held dear by a traditional Latin American upbringing.
PSYCHE'S PLAYGROUND (2010):ﾠ Psyche wears a hibiscus, a symbol of beauty, as a butterfly – not coincidentally called “psyche” or soul in ancient Greek – perches on the sign of the bakery where I used to go every morning before diving.ﾠ There, Utilan men would share gossip from the prior day’s events and were served breakfast, pastries and rich local coffee by some very hard working Utilan women.ﾠ As is the case with butterflies, I believe that my true beauty has blossomed with age.ﾠ I was able to capture a nesting hummingbird, which I incorporated into this work, a recurring symbol of energy, joy and self-discovery.ﾠ The playful monkey serves as a reminder to have fun, even through difficult development, and to always hang on to our untamed nature.
